We all have legitimate time restraints. Yesterday I talked about making the things you value a priority in your life and schedule. Simply put: Make It A Priority. Today let’s tackle actually making our priorities evident in your daily life.
“I don’t have time” is a common phrase that is often uttered in our culture. Many times this is where individuals stop. For things that are not or shouldn’t be a priority, this is great! We need to be able to say no to things that are unhealthy, unnecessary, or complete distractions. The problem arises when there are goals, responsibilities, and expectations that should be a priority in our lives but are not because our days and time are overcrowded.
Here is the hard truth: If it is or should be a priority, you have to make time. Many times we choose not to make the time because it takes additional energy and effort that we feel that we already do not have or have so little of. Stop ignoring the promptings. Make time for the things that are the top priorities in your life.
For the Christian, whatever God is telling you needs to be a priority needs to be placed first and of high importance in your life. I know it might be hard but you have to trust God and believe everything else will fall into place. Anything placed before or above God and what He desires you to do is an idol. Idols must come down and be removed. With open hands, we have to be willing to set aside anything and anyone that gets in the way of us obeying God and doing what He is instructing us to do. This will eliminate a lot of wasted time so that we can actually have to go after the things we really need to give our focus and attention to.
Making Time
To make time, take a look at the past, present, and future.
The Past: Review how you have been spending your time. Take out your planner and review your normal schedule. Consider what you have written and what you actually live out on a day to day basis. If you don’t have a planner to look back at, write out what a normal day looks like to review. Determine where there are gaps of time being unused or misused.
The Present: Determine what needs to stay and what needs to go. Anything filling your time that is not aligned to the priorities you listed yesterday must go. Take your list of priorities and make the necessary adjustments to your time/day.
The Future: Make it a habit to reflect on your time daily and weekly to determine what adjustments you need to make along the way. Don’t expect your priorities to be the same forever. They will change in different seasons. Be prepared to pivot as needed
