With all of the uncertainty we have experienced this year, I can understand the hesitancy to think about or plan for any goals or aspirations. While I understand, I’m not going to let you off the hook. As long as you have breath in your body, you still have purpose. Don’t quit seeking the Lord and going after what He has for you and wants to do in and through your life. Resist the temptation to be apathetic. We have to live life intentionally.
So if you haven’t already, take time this week to identify your goals for 2021. If you already have goals, great! I encourage you to still take time to read this article to implement anything you might have missed in your identification process. Let’s get into the steps!
Spend Time With The Lord
Resist the urge to skip this step and either jump to identifying your goals or going straight into prayer time asking Him what goals you should have. Unless this is already a part of your lifestyle, which it should be, start here. All that we do and all that we are should come from an intimate relationship with Him. Can you sit before the the Lord before asking Him for anything? Intimacy with Him is important to you living out the life your are meant to live. Remember you have died and Christ should be living through you. Your relationship with Him comes before seeking any goal, purpose, calling or direction. Missing this key step can lead to the pursuance of the wrong goals and passions. Spend time with Him and get His heart. This will not put you back or delay you moving forward. From this place you can actually receive the revelation of what you are to do and pursue.
Ask The Lord and Give Him Your Yes
Spend time asking the Lord what He wants you to do and pursue. Submit your desires to Him. He wants to hear from you and know your heart. Be willing to let go of anything He wants you to release. Listen to what it is He is saying. Write it down. Be determined to take the time you and your Creator need. Receive what He has to say, give God our yes, obey His instructions, and go where He leads.
Research What’s Required
Once you know what He wants you to do and you receive the instructions, begin to research. Research and identify what is required for you to do what God is telling you to do. Notice before coming out of your time with the Lord and allowing Him to reveal the goals you should go after, you are to give Him you yes. Wrestle with the Lord and get to the yes. It’s not until your yes is given that you should go trying to analyze the details of what your yes will require. The details should drive you to keep and carry out your yes, not be a determining factor of whether or not you will give your yes. You will probably find that what God is calling you to pursue is much bigger or requires a lot more than you anticipated. Count the cost and continue to give God your yes. Your yes must be a continual yes. Don’t let the details scare you. Continue with the confidence that He is with you and leading you.
Identify What Is In Your Hands
What do you have and what do you absolutely need to get in order to move forward in obedience? For example, if God says I want you to start being disciplined and work out in the gym, you have to get a gym membership if you don’t already have one. On the other hand of He is telling you to pursue being a blogger or influencer, you don’t have to have the latest and greatest laptop or camera to start. What is in your hands now, such as a smartphone, that you can use to begin pursuing the goal. Other things may come along the way.
For example, all David had was a sling and 5 stones, but by the time He finished the battle he gained Goliath’s sword. Start with what God has given you and He will provide everything else you need, when you need it, along the way. Identify what you must get and trust that outside of that, what God has already given you is enough. Be faithful with what you have now and in time He will entrust you with more.
Get To It!
That’s where we will end this week. Focus on increasing the depth and intimacy of your time with the Lord. Ask Him what He desires you to pursue. Give Him your yes. Identify what is in your hands and what you actually need to get. Next week you’ll be ready to actually begin writing and formalizing your plan.
